First-Ever Green Homeowners Insurance

Fireman's Fund continues to lead the industry in staking out the green insurance category. In 2006, we became the nation's first provider of green insurance for commercial buildings. Now we are also the first to offer admitted green insurance for homeowners.

Green Home and Personal Property Upgrade

This innovative new coverage provides a number of options to upgrade a home to green standards. In California it is included in the Prestige® Home Premier policy, and in other states it is an available endorsement. For example, if a total loss occurs, Fireman's Fund will pay to rebuild the covered home to meet "certified" requirements of the Leadership in Energy and

Environmental Design (LEED®) for Homes Green Building Rating

System of the U.S. Green Building Council. The coverage also pays an additional amount to hire a LEED-accredited professional to help with the home's design and construction, with an added amount to pay certification costs. If your client's home is already LEED-certified, Fireman's Fund would apply a five percent credit to the policy.

Equipment Breakdown for Smart Homes

Most homeowners policies provide no protection for mechanical, electrical, or heating equipment breakdown. So Fireman's Fund developed another new solution for homeowners: equipment breakdown insurance.

For the owners of the growing number of high-end smart homes, which integrate technology and services through digital networking and feature centrally-monitored security systems, this endorsement is especially attractive. It fills a critical coverage gap at a relatively low cost. It also provides for an upgrade to ‘green' standards — if equipment covered under the policy requires replacement due to an accident, Fireman's Fund will pay for an upgrade that is better for the environment, safer, or more efficient.

This coverage is available in many states now. We'll feature more in our next issue.

The new endorsement also pays to replace damaged or destroyed electronic appliances with equivalent ENERGY STAR®-qualified equipment. Also included are energy-efficient upgrades to building materials, interior lighting systems, roofing, interior plumbing, and heating and cooling systems. In each case, Fireman's Fund pays to replace damaged materials and equipment to meet standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The upgrades also promote the use of sustainably-developed and recycled materials, including, where available, Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood products for flooring, millwork, ceilings, siding, and framing.
